The Open Space Authority and its partners are bringing you a full calendar of virtual, livestreamed outdoor events and programs to keep you connected to nature during these unprecedented times. Join us for tours of parks, preserves, and urban open spaces, mental wellness activities, outdoor art lessons, live animal presentations, native plant walks, and more!

These are livestreamed programs that you can tune in to from the comfort of your own home! All you need is computer, phone, or iPad and your love of nature. Click on each event title below to learn more and get the livestream link. Be sure to check back on this page as we continue to add events!

Join us to hear the remarkable story of how Ulistac was transformed from a neglected "weed patch" into an oasis of native California habitats in the midst of Silicon Valley.

Laguna Seca Insect Walk

Traditional Uses of Native Plants & Trees

Join us on a virtual nature walk at Ulistac Natural Area to discuss the traditional uses of native plants and trees. We’ll go over making acorn bread and cookies, blue elderberry jam, and bay laurel nuts. Our guide, Richard of Saved By Nature, is a naturalist who studied ethnobotany with Dr. Beverly Ortiz, he’ll teach us how to correctly and thoroughly process these foods so that they may be eaten by humans. We do not condone harvesting at Ulistac and request that all plant life be left for the wildlife. Take only photos, leave only footsteps!

Tune in to this livestreamed walk along the Los Gatos Creek to learn about the California beaver, Chinook salmon, and steelhead rainbow trout that call the waterways of Santa Clara Valley home. We’ll discuss the life cycle and the miraculous journey of the salmon and trout that make their way under the Golden Gate Bridge and into the South Bay to swim up our local rivers and creeks every year! In the Southwest it was corn, and in the Great Plains it was the buffalo. Native Californians had many other food sources, such as salmon, deer, and bear - but it was the acorns found in the shaded oak woodlands that have sustained California's native peoples for thousands of years. Today, some Native Americans still practice traditional methods of gathering food, like acorns. Join the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority and Saved By Nature! Golden Eagles of the Northern Diablo Range (video link coming soon!)

The northern Diablo Range of west-central California supports one of the largest and densest known breeding populations of golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) in the world. This region includes the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area (APWRA) where collisions with wind turbines are a major source of mortality for golden eagles and other raptors. This presentation will provide an overview of an ongoing study by authors Patrick Kolar, M.S. and J. David Wiens of golden eagles in the area and discuss how their broader research in the Diablo Range is being used to avoid or mitigate impacts to breeding pairs of eagles at the APWRA. They will also discuss early analyses of nest sites, breeding behavior, and possible impacts of the 2020 SCU lightning-wildfire complex that affected an estimated 80 pairs of eagles monitored prior to this mega-fire event.
