“Fall” into meals and snacks featuring seasonal fruits and veggies perfect for busy families.

When the weather starts to turn a bit cooler, thoughts of changes to our menus are top of mind, too. One of the easiest ways I think there is to keep what we eat interesting to our families and ourselves is focusing on fruits and veggies by season. With a simple swap to what we add to salads, incorporating into hot dishes, and adding to grab and go snacks, in-season fruits and vegetables can be fun for all ages, regardless of cooking skills. Here are a few fall favorites to add to your daily routine, and check out the seasonal chart we have on IGA Better Choices for more inspiration!

Apples – A popular favorite with so many varieties, apples taste good and they are good for you, too. From antioxidants to fiber and more, a small to medium apple (about the size of your fist or a baseball) is 100 calories or less, so it fits right into your day. Try them washed and whole, cut into slices and served with a dip, baked and sprinkled with cinnamon, added to salads, served with entrees, and more.  From appetizer through dessert, this fall favorite has you covered.

Bell Peppers – For about 46 calories per cup of chopped bell pepper, these bright, crunchy veggies bring interest, taste, and nutrition to the table. Enjoy all their colorful varieties, hot or cold! Add bell peppers to chili, enjoy in a breakfast burrito, or simply wash, cut, and eat as a crisp snack.

Carrots – Did you know that one medium carrot is only 25 calories? These are a favorite for snacking, and they add nutrition, color, and great taste to dishes. A favorite chilly day recipe combines carrots and other vegetables with chicken, pork, or beef. Fast and/or one dish oven meals are great for busy days, and the leftovers work well for future meals or a tasty, hearty soup.

What are some of your fall favorites? Try to incorporate them in your meal or snack today!
